Summer Solstice Results

‘The summer night is like a perfection of thought.’ – Wallace Stevens

A lawn devoid of movement slowly started filling with the sounds of friends, old and new, chatting and laughing together. A shimmering lake in the distance, the sounds of maybe a few too many bugs buzzing around our heads, and the sun shining long into the evening. The Shawangunk Runners annual Summer Solstice 14k Trail Run took place on a magnificent evening yesterday. I’m not sure anything bad could have been said about the weather, the race or the people.

First I want to thank the race director Steve Schallenkamp for once again putting together a wonderful race. Also we can’t thank the volunteers enough without whom we wouldn’t be able to put on the race. Hopefully you all thanked them profusely when you saw them.

Personally I want to thank all those who didn’t mind that I forgot their names during bib pickup. I find it amazing how quickly my mind blanks when I’m a little stressed.

I hope you all will come back next year and/or join us for some of our other races (below).

2017 Summer Solstice 14k Trail Run Final Info

The Summer Solstice Run is this Wednesday!

We wanted to make you aware of a few things to make it an enjoyable evening.

The race is Sold Out and there will be no day of registration if any of your friends are asking.

Race Info
———
BIB Pickup Opens: 5:00pm

Race Start: 6:30pm

Parking: Minnewaska charges $10 per car entry. Empire State Passport is accepted but please do not purchase one when entering the park. This year we’re implementing a new parking plan. Single occupant vehicles will be directed to park in the lower awosting lot. Shuttles will be running from the bottom to the top. There will be a sign near the bathroom building to line up and the shuttles will have a sign in the window stating they are a race shuttle. Cars of 2 & more will be able to park in the upper lots. Please car pool to save money, save parking spots, and get to park near the race start.

Course: Start near the scenic view of Lake Minnewaska near the parking area. Head down the hill and go left to stay on Red. Make a right onto the Blue trail (@.35) and follow it up and over Castle Point (@3.5). After the descent you continue on blue until you hit Black (@4.75) which continues straight. Continue straight on Black until it turns to the Green Trail (@5.2). Take the Green trail all the way back to the “beach” section of Lake Minnewaska (@8.25) where you go left back up the hill to the finish near where you started. Note: estimates are based off GPS and are most likely off a bit.

Water Stops: There will be 3 water stops (only water). One @ 2 miles after the start, one at the top of Castle Point (@3.5) and one at the intersection of the Green & Black Trail (@5.2)

Course Markings: Course will be marked with flour arrows and cones to help guide you.

Post Race: Please pick up your finishers towel after you cross the finish line. There will be water available, wraps, bagels, watermelon, cookies and Gatorade at finish while they last.

Final comment: We need to be cleaned/packed up and out of the park by 9pm. If you feel you need extra time to run (ex. you’ll need over 2 hours, finishing after 8:30) please get with a volunteer after you’ve picked up your bib and we’ll work with you to make it a stress free evening. This will include things like starting early, wearing your bib backwards (no numbers showing), self timing (preferably with a watch) and going through a separate chute at the finish line.

2017 Summer Solstice 14k Trail Run

Hi Runners!

So we’re 41 days away from this years Summer Solstice 14K Trail Run at Minnewaska State Park. Registration has been moving along but wanted to give everyone a heads up as to where the registration links are located.

Online: https://www.zippyreg.com/online_reg/registration.php?eventID=908

Mail-In: https://shawangunkrunners.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/2017-Summer-Solstice-Registration.pdf

In communicating with Minnewaska we’ve decided to cap the race at 275 entries this year. We ask that all runners try their best to car pool to save space as well as save yourselves some money since it’s $10 to get into the park per car.

Having just run Rock The Ridge I can say that the carriage roads are in great condition and it should be a wonderful evening of running.

Currently the plan is to limit both Summer Solstice and After The Leaves registration to 300 people this year but that is subject to change as we work with Minnewaska Sate Park.

Next up is changing in price for Summer Solstice and After The Leaves Half Marathon…last years price was $15. This year we are going to raise the price of these events to $20.  2017 Shawangunk Runner Members, in good standing, will receive the original price of $15 as well as early registration for these events. If you’d like to become a member of the Shawangunk Runners please fill out and mail this form -> Membership Form

Registration for Summer Solstice is planned to open up for members on April 1st with general registration opening 1 week later on April 8th. Registration for After The Leaves Half Marathon will open up to members on Sept 1st with general registration opening 1 week later on Sept 8th. I will create new posts as these events get closer.

We are also looking into member gear options as well as the possibility of having shirts available for purchase for this seasons races. These shirts will most likely not be available for purchase at the race but we will provide a link to allow you to purchase these on your own. We want to keep our races reasonably priced while allowing the widest range of options for people. We don’t want to make money off of any merchandise. We’ll be discussing more at our next meeting and hopefully we’ll have something available this year.

Finally we elected the board members for the 2017 year…
President: Steve Schallenkamp
Vice President: Beth Glace
Treasurer: Dan Freedman
Secretary: Greg Cecere

Initial Results from After The Leaves

It was a absolutely beautiful November day for a run through Minnewaska State Park. I hope you all enjoyed the race. I want to thank all the volunteers who came out to help without which we wouldn’t be able to put on our races. There were a few snafus that we will learn from and discuss to hopefully make the race even better next year.

Please find the initial results here ->2016-after-the-leaves-results

If there are any mistakes in the results please email me at christopher.regan@gmail.com

We strive to make our races affordable and enjoyable to all who run. If you have comments / suggestions you can email me or the race director.

Thank You!

BIBs: Are assigned by last name. They MUST be worn on the front and visible. Your bib needs to be recorded after you cross the finish line for your time to be recorded.

Finish Line: Only cross the finish line once. If you go back to run with a friend / family please do not cross the finish line a second time. Also since we need to record your bib # please slow down in the chute and do not pass (stay in order that you crossed the finish line)

Finisher Glass: You will receive your glass as you exit the finish line chute.

Awards: Top 3 Overall Male / Female, Top 3 in both Male & Female age groups for the following 19 & Under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 & Over.

Water Stops: 3 water stops at ~4 miles, ~8 miles and ~11 miles

Early starters: We’ve had many chose the option to early start. We have a few requests for those choosing to early start. There will be an official early start at 11am. Early starters must do the following to properly have your time recorded…
1. You must self time. Either use a watch, phone or track what time you started / finished.
2. You must wear your bib on the front with the number turned backwards facing your body. This lets us know you are an early starter at the finish line.
3. There will be a special chute for early starters. Please do not cross the normal finish line.
4. You must come to the timing table to fill out a card with your information. BIB # and Time are the most important.
Note: If you are self timing you do not have to start with the official early starters but please let someone know you are starting.

Post-race Food: Wraps and soup from P&G’s, bagels, bananas, apples, and cookies

Thanks all, see you Sunday!
